Jyotish Siromani is an honorific term meaning "Crown Jewel" among astrologers.
The degree Jyotish Sarasvati is named in honor of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura (1874-1936)
who, in his youth, was an erudite mathematician and scholar of Jyotish--both astrology and astronomy. He was the most famous astrologer and astronomer in Bengal at his time and was offered the Chair of Astronomy at the University of Calcutta. He gave up Jyotish in his early 20's to concentrate on Bhakti yoga. He is one of the stellar members of the Brahma-Madhva-Gaudiya sampradaya. Followers of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura are called Sarasvatas, and in the Sarasvata gotra. Sarasvati is a reference to the goddess of learning
